The blowout method is a recommended approach for winterizing your sprinkler system in Fairfield County, CT, to prevent freeze damage during the cold Southern New England winters. This method involves using an air compressor with a high enough CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) rating to safely clear water from the irrigation lines.
- Turn off the water supply and connect the air compressor to the line fitting, keeping the compressor valve closed.
- Prepare the system by closing the backflow isolation valves and turning on the zone controller for the sprinklers.
- Introduce air gently by opening the compressor valve slowly to avoid damaging the system components.
Throughout the blowout, ensure the pressure doesn’t exceed 80 PSI and stays below the maximum pressure rating of the lowest-rated component in each zone for safe and effective winterization. Always wear ANSI-approved eye protection and follow safety guidelines.
The manual method is effective when a sprinkler system’s manual valves are positioned at the end of low points of the irrigation piping. The process involves disconnecting your water supply and activating all manual drain valves. After that, the boiler drain valve on the stop and waste valve is then opened to drain any residual water between the irrigation water shut-off valve and the backflow device.
Some systems have automated components that drain the water when the main valve is shut off.
